Welcome in PLGrid Infrastructure!

Below you will find the most important information needed to start using PLGrid Infrastructure.

Basic information

PLGrid is a nationwide IT infrastructure dedicated to scientists. We provide services and resources from federated Polish top 5 supercomputer centers. PLGrid offer includes: 3,5 PetaFlops of computing resources and more than 20 PetaBytes of storage.

To get access to PLGrid resources you have to be affiliated by Polish Scientific Institution or cooperate with a polish scientist.

How to get access?

Only a few simple steps are needed to create an account, which allows you later to get access to all PLGrid services (via web platform - Portal PLGrid).

Go to https://portal.plgrid.pl/ to create your account. Fill in the registration form with all required information. Your login must start with "plg".

You are allow to have only one account!

Get an affiliation

Affiliation by Polish Scientific Institution is a mandatory requirement. You have to be an employee in one to have access to PLGrid services. Otherwise you must provide information about your Supervisor’s affiliation. Your Supervisor must then confirm your identity and the scientific colaboration with you.

After your identity is confirmed you will gain access to the resources such as: computing or storage resources, cloud platform, software for scientists, project management tools, e-learning tools and Helpdesk platform - all of this in one account!

Get the trial grant

Resource Grant is an agreement between User and PLGrid Infrastructure. This agreement contains the specification of resources that you have applied for. Upon registration you will receive a trial grant. It consists of 1000 normalized CPU hours and 10 GB of storage for one year per computing center. If you require more resources you can apply for a Proper Grant.

Activate a service

PLGrid Infrastructure provides a variety of tools and services for your computations and storage needs. You have access to repository of services via Services Catalogue (in Polish: Katalog Aplikacji i Usług).

For some Users this is the last step.

If you need more resources than trial grant offers follow the next three steps.

1. Set up a workgroup

A workgroup allows user or group of users to negotiate resources with PLGrid's supercomputer centers. Users can share resources within one workgroup.

2. Get a certificate

Certificate confirms user's identity within PLGrid Infrastructure. It allows you to use some of PLGrid services without requiring your login and password. Also some applications or tools require the certificate to access them.

3. Get a Proper Grant

For user who needs more resources than provided by trial grant PLGrid Infrastructure dedicates a Proper Grant. User must set up a workgroup, it is a mandatory requirement. Only workgroup represented by its manager is allow to negotiate the resources.  The manager is also responsible for reporting results and publications reached while working with the grant. The workgroup does not have to be a group of users. There can be only one person.

Grants explained in four steps:

1. Go to "GRANTY" in Portal's menu, then fill and specify your requirements. You must ensure there that some results, posters or publications are expected.

2. Your request could need a scientific recommendation. Our experts analyze your previous grant's reports and the description in your current request.

3. Operation stuff allocates resources to the grant.

4. Workgroup Manager reports progress and results of grant usage.

What's next?

Decide how to use PLGrid's offer. You can schedule the tasks or store your data and files. Infrastructure offers a variety of tools for Linux users and Windows users as well. There is also a possibility to get acces to domain specific services for wide range of science fields.

Our users have documentation and manuals at their disposal. In case of difficulties we recommend writing a ticket on Helpdesk platform.

For less experienced users we would like to recommend using middlewares (QCG or UNICORE) for the computations. If you are more advanced, you can access resources via SSH protocol.

If your research in grant leads to some publications, remember to add acknowledgements:

"This research was supported in part by PLGrid Infrastructure".
